It has the same properties with a granite. It is made of a bending resin with natural quartz mixed on it; this is the very reason why a zodiac countertop is durable and hard.

Zodiac countertops can come in a variety of colors, so there is really a wide array of options for you to choose from. It is chosen by most kitchen designers because the diversity of colors can make you shift the pattern of the area without any trouble or difficulty.

Zodiac Countertop: Things You Need to Consider

Like any other purchases, you need to look at some factors which would make you opt for a quartz finsih. These four things include: the color of the quartz, zodiac countertop durability, the costs of the material, and your home design preferences.

The colors of the zodiac countertop can actually make you decide the tone of your kitchen. You can choose to be bold and daring or you can opt for a conservative look. Almost every look is provided to you by a zodiac countertop. Next, you have to consider the durability before you decide on something.

The zodiac countertop can last for a very long time; and the good thing about quartz is you do not have to use a sealant to protect it. So aside from its durability, you can save on the sealant too. Third, you have to calculate the price.

You always have to weigh if the price meets the quality it brings. Lastly, you need to know your kitchen preferences meet with the designs of a zodiac countertop. If you want a vibrant and luxurious appeal, then quartz countertop is the right thing for you.

Zodiac Countertop: Care and Maintenance

The best thing about a zodiac countertop is being worry-free from scratches, heat and chemicals. Because it is extremely resistant to these cases, it would be easier for you to manage it.

Although it is not totally resistant to damage, there are lesser chances that it may acquire one. However, you still have to take care of them properly. They are taken cared of the same way as other countertops. Zodiac countertops need to be cleansed after each use.

Remember to keep it dry and free of chemicals at all times, and keep it away from scratches by using chopping boards instead of slicing directly on its surface. Lastly, abrasive pads should not be used to scrub the surface of a zodiac countertop. If you follow all these, you'll be guaranteed that your zodiac countertops can last for a very long time.

zinc countertop

What You Need To Know About Zinc Countertops

When you think countertops, you generally don’t think zinc. But zinc countertops provide some advantages over that of other kinds of popular countertop material. They are sturdy, easy to clean, easy to polish and cheaper than other kinds of countertop materials, such as granite, soapstone and even stainless steel. Zinc countertop material can even be rolled up for easier transport.

How Rare Is It?

Another thing you don’t have to worry about with zinc countertops is finding zinc. It's the twenty-third most abundant element on the planet. Zinc can even be found in your body – but only in minute amounts. You'd have to go through a nation's worth of bodies in order to recover enough zinc to line one kitchen countertop.

Very thing sheets are all you need for zinc countertops. Even laminate, the most common material for countertops, is only a sixteenth of an inch think. As previously mentioned, zinc countertop sheeting can be rolled up for portability. A reporter and weekend do-it-yourselfer, Eric M. Weiss, even had a company ship his zinc countertops through the mail. The shipping was a lot less than expected, because they could roll it up and send it in a tube.

How Long Does It Last?

Another of the advantages of zinc countertops is that they generally last longer than laminate. They also don’t rust like stainless steel (although they can tarnish). When they get dull, scratched or a bit scuffed, they can be polished up to a shine again with a portable electric power polisher. Even many cordless drills or sanders carry polisher features. Only polish when you absolutely have to, otherwise you may weaken the zinc.

One of the best features of zinc countertops is that they are safe to use with food. However, this also makes them prone to get permanent stains from acidic foods. By knowing this in advance, you know to clean your zinc countertops right away when they get in contact with food. They can be cleaned with any mild soap or detergent and water.

Some people prefer to wax their zinc countertops once in a while with beeswax or what's known as "butcher's wax". When you decide to polish in this way, you need to polish the whole countertop, not just polish here and there. Otherwise, you'll wind up with a very blotchy looking countertop. Also, try not to get your countertop in contact with heat of over 300 degrees Farenheight, otherwise the zinc will melt.

tile countertop

Deciding Whether or Not to Choose a Tile Countertop

Whether you are building a kitchen from scratch or have just decided to do a bit of remodeling, you are going to need to figure out what material you are going to have your countertops made of. There are a few worthwhile options, one of the most popular being the tile countertop.

There are both advantages and disadvantages of the tile countertop, and you will want to be aware of all of these in order to best decide whether this is the material that is going to be best suited to you and your needs.

One of the biggest advantages is that it is so affordable, and one of the biggest disadvantages is that it is not as resilient as other countertop materials. It also requires more maintenance than most countertop materials, so you will need to be prepared to perform regular and routine maintenance.

How To

Tiling a countertop is actually quite easy, and you may even be able to do it on your own. If you want to create a tile countertop for your kitchen, the first step being to remove the old countertop. Now you will need to put on the plywood, which is going to be the first of three layers of material that are going to be required here.

Next to create the tile countertop you will need to put on the concrete board, which is what the tile is going to sit on. The concrete board is going to help by creating a flat surface, and also ensure that once the tile has been placed that it will not shift or break.

Now comes the tile laying and before you actually begin the tiling you should do a test run without mortar, to make sure you know where all the pieces are going to go and that you have enough. The idea is to come up with a layout that is going to look balanced and for you to avoid unsightly narrow pieces on the outside edges.

The final step is grouting, and this is how you fill in the parts around the tiles and make sure that the entire tile countertop is solid and concrete. Grouting is really a two step process, and so using a rubber float you are going to want to first distribute the grout across the surface and then press it firmly into each joint using a pushing down motion, never up.

stone countertop

Finishes for Stone Countertops

Stone countertops are some of the most beautiful and durable choices a homeowner can make, whether it's for the kitchen or bathroom or anywhere else. They are strong, heat resistant, and easy to clean.

What most people don't realize, however, is that stone countertops are available in a number of different finishes. This will depend largely on the type of stone used, but each has a number of choices that you could go with. Let's take a look at just a few of them.

Sandblasted Finish

This type of finish is accomplished by treating the stone with a pressurized sand and water mixture. The result is a finish that is natural and textured. There is a bit of maintenance required for this type of finish as it will need to be sealed for protection.

Polished Finish

One of the most popular stone countertop finishes is the polished finish. In this case, a machine is used to polish the material down to a shiny, almost glass-like appearance. This type of finish really brings out the color and inner textures of the stone. It is also more durable and easier to clean than most other types of stone countertop finishes. For this reason, it is recommended for areas that receive more traffic than others.

Flamed Finish

This finish results in a very rough and porous surface. The stone is exposed to very high heat, causing the crystals inside to pop. This type of finish requires a bit more maintenance than most others. It needs to be sealed and treated regularly. This is why it should be used in areas of low traffic.

There are also many other types of stone countertop finishes that have not reached the level of popularity that the others have. Among these are brushed and acid finishes. With the first one, the stone is treated with a series of wire brushes. With the acid finish, the stone is treated with acid, which creates an aged and porous appearance.

Whatever style of finish you choose, stone countertops provide a durable and attractive look for any room. They provide resistance to heat and most kinds of stains. They are, however, a little harder to maintain than most other types of countertops.

Stone countertops can be purchased through many home improvement stores. Many people will also use stone out of old homes to make their countertops. This provides an aged look that many people are creating for their homes today.

stainless steel countertop

How to Maintain a Stainless Steel Countertop

Investing for something isn't easy. That is why it is very important to take care of the items which we have expensively or inexpensively bought. Same is true with the stainless steel countertop we have at home. If we expect it to last, then we should institute ways to make it usable through time. Its quality must also be preserved through some simple measures that we have to perform at home. Below are the ways which could help maintain the appeal and durability of your stainless steel countertops.

Things You'll Need to Maintain a Stainless Steel Countertop

You need to invest on a few things to ensure that your stainless steel countertop will be taken cared of. The items which you need to purchase for the countertop maintenance are: sponge, lemon or olive oil, scratch free cleanser with bleach, and a steel wool. All of which can be found in your local supermarkets. Since the items needed are very accessible, there would be no reason for you not to take care of your stainless steel countertops.

Steps in Cleaning Your Stainless Steel Countertop

Here are the steps you need to perform after every use of your stainless steel countertop: scrub the entire surface area with a safe powdered cleanser, scrape the gunk around the edges using a butter knife, rinse the countertop area thoroughly, scrub down the exterior portion of the countertop using a steel wool pad, do the strokes in a circular motion, elbow grease can be used to make your countertop look new, spread lemon or olive oil for a shinier look, and use dish cloth to wipe your stainless steel countertop after every use.

Ways to Take Care of Your Stainless Steel Countertop

Despite being coined as the "stainless" steel, the stainless steel countertop is not totally safe from stain and corrosion. Therefore, you need to follow some tips which can help prevent these things from happening. First off, you need to avoid harsh household maintenance products such as bleach because its acidic nature harms the surface of your stainless steel countertop.

Next, you have to avoid leaving acidic food on a bare stainless steel countertop because this will cause staining. Warm water and soap is enough to maintain the cleanliness in your kitchen counters. Lastly, remember to dry everything on your countertop to avoid stain marks. By doing the things mentioned above, you'll be guaranteed that your stainless steel countertop will retain its shine and appeal even after a long year's use.

solid surface countertop

Going With a Solid Surface Countertop

A solid surface countertop is going to be a great investment in your home. These countertops are easy to install, easy to clean, and great on the eyes. You can find a solid surface countertop in almost any color in the world, which offers great versatility and allows you to perfectly coordinate it with the existing décor in your home.

Solid surface countertops have been popular throughout the centuries but are more popular now than ever before. One of the main reasons that they are so popular is because they are so durable, but also because they have such a uniform appearance.

Formica

Of all the choices you have when it comes to a solid surface countertop, Formica is one of the very best. People know of this high pressure laminate surface by its name brand, and Formica was one of the first surfaces to be used for countertop purposes.

Corian

This is another option if you are choosing to go with a solid surface countertop. The durability of this surface is far better than most laminates, and it also does not come across as looking cheap, which some laminates do.

This is one thing that every homeowner wants to avoid, for numerous reasons but more than anything because it will decrease their overall home resale value.

Silestone

There is also Silestone that you can use for your solid surface countertop, and although this is the most affordable option, it does often look rather cheap. This is one of the newer solid surface countertop products, and is a fabrication of natural quartz and crystal, bonded with a polyurethane resin to create a solid surface.

Whether you are choosing a solid surface or any other design for your kitchen, it is important that you take your time and not rush into it. There are so many options, and especially to the novice designer, you do not want to make the wrong decision. You will need to set out a budget for yourself beforehand, as the prices of countertop materials vary so greatly and of course you will only be able to pay for what you can afford.

There are some terrific home design specialists out there that you can go to for assistance through this, namely countertop installers who will actually come into your home and look at your kitchen, then work with you keeping your budget and desires in mind to help you achieve the look that you want.

soapstone countertop

Why Soapstone Countertop is Best for Your Kitchen

There are several materials which you can use for your kitchen countertops; and one of those would be the soapstone. Although ceramic and granite materials are the ones usually used for countertops, the soapstone material can be an equivalent because of its natural properties and its resilience to damage. In fact, many people nowadays use the soapstone for a more natural appeal. It is also believed the material will be opted for by many home owners who want to have slight changes in their kitchen area.

Soapstone Countertop and its Material

If you want a more viable and effective choice for outfitting your homes with only the best form and function, then you need to consider the use of a soapstone countertop. The latter is harvested from quarries which resemble a ceramic and a granite tile. The soapstone material is viewed as a satellite stone and is composed mainly of dolomite, chlorite, magnesite, and talc. Soapstone dates back to some thousand years ago and has been an ancient raw material on this planet; this could only mean that the soapstone can last for a very long time and can withstand any change in its surroundings.

Soapstone Countertop and its Properties

The properties of soapstone have been linked to several uses throughout the generations; and because of so many reasons, it is still being commonly utilized today. The soapstone is smooth and soft to touch. It bears the name "soap" because it resembles the texture of one. It is also a pliable material which can be used not only as countertops but as sculptures and vases as well.

The soapstone countertop makes it perfect to be used for kitchen purposes because of its durability. It is also resilient to specific environmental factors such as scratches, heat, impact and stains. Unlike stainless steel, the soapstone countertop is an acid and alkali resistant; this has been the major reason why it is widely utilized these days. Another advantage of a soapstone countertop is its longevity in use.

Soapstone Countertop and the Care Needed

When the soapstone countertop is first installed, it needs to have a protective layer which will make it last for a long time. Through the use of a stone sealant or a mineral oil, the soapstone countertop can be given much protection. Aside from this protective step, the other care measures are the same with that of other countertop materials. You simply need to protect it from scratch or from stains using cleansers and scrubs and you'll be able to get away with a perfect soapstone countertop after that.

silestone countertop

Silestone Countertops in the Kitchen

Anyone who has ever shopped for kitchen countertops can tell you how many different choices there are. This trend continues to grow as technology advances and more materials are able to be used for this purpose. This article will take a look at Silestone countertops specifically.

What is it?

Although they are gaining in popularity, many people do not know exactly what Silestone countertops are. Basically, they are made of quartz, which is one of the hardest materials known to man. You can probably see already the advantages of such a countertop.

Advantages

There are many advantages to installing Silestone countertops. Due to the hardness of the material, obviously, the most notable would be the durability. The quartz composition of these countertops make them naturally resistant to most scratches.

Most other countertops are always at risk of scratching or gouging when something is dropped on them or dragged across them. This is not the case with Silestone countertops. In most cases, you will not even need to use a cutting board. Unless someone is intentionally trying to damage this type of countertop, it should be able to stand up to just about anything.

Silestone countertops also have the advantage of not needing to be sealed. This is not the case with many other natural countertop materials. When you consider this, and the ease with which they can be cleaned, you will see that maintenance is very simple for these countertops.

They are very resistant to staining, which makes most spills quite easy to clean up. Your average household cleaning products should be able to do the trick. Difficult hardened spills can even be scraped off because of the scratch resistant quality they have. Their durable nature also makes them quite able to withstand heat. Unless they are exposed to prolonged periods of heat, you should be able to set almost any hot item on them without worrying.

Another unique feature offered by Silestone countertops is Microban protection. Hence silicone based sealers should not be used, because they have a higher surface tension and therefore cannot fill the pores.

It is imperative that the Sealer Granite Counter Top should seal the surface pores completely, otherwise it is susceptible to stains from oil, water and acids. Therefore, it is necessary to follow the steps to seal the granite tip.

Steps

The Sealer Granite Counter Top should be applied uniformly to the counter top with a clean white rag. A brush can be used instead of a rag. Wait for about five minutes while the sealer is absorbed into the stone. Once it seems to have dried, apply some more sealer on the granite rubbing it in using a clean and dry rag.

Repeat the whole process on the next section of the stone till the entire counter top is sealed. A second application of Sealer Granite Counter Top is necessary, but after a gap of about two hours, depending on the instructions given by the brand of the sealer.

Take an area of about four to five square feet at a time and work on it. Two coats of Sealer Granite Counter Top are generally always recommended, even if the manufacturer advises otherwise. Once your stone is sufficiently sealed, just make a quick check to find out whether the sealing has been done completely. Spill water on the counter top and wait for half an hour and then wipe it off. If the stone does not become darker, the counter top has been well sealed.

Tips

The surface of granite is porous and hence the area has to be cleaned thoroughly and then dried before sealing. The drying may even have to happen overnight, depending on the quality and thickness of the granite.

The surface has to be completely sealed, before you apply the sealant. It is best to use a permanent sealer, but if you do not use one, the granite has to be resealed once every six months or a year.

Of course the Sealer Granite Counter Top is not required for all types of granite, because some granite which is very dense do not need to be sealed. But sometimes even they etch, and it is always better to seal it because then it is protected against all possible things that could cause it damage.

replace kitchen countertop

What to do When You Want to Replace Kitchen Countertop

If you want to replace kitchen countertop, first know that you are going to have to go through a process that really should not be rushed. Remodeling any part of your home should never be hasty, but especially when it comes to the kitchen and its main focal point, the countertops, you are going to want to put a lot of time and consideration into your decisions.

Material

The first step to replace kitchen countertop is to decide on the type of material you want the new countertop to be made of. Granite is the classic choice and the one that most homeowners decide to go with.

Although it is a bit more expensive than the other choices, it is well worth it because it is stain-resistant, kid-resistant. Also it does not chip easily and it is much more low-maintenance than other natural stone materials.

If you want to replace kitchen countertop you may also want to consider engineered stone. This is a relatively new option in countertop material, but one that is fantastic nonetheless. Although the look of engineered stone is more uniform than natural stone you will still get a more upscale look with the engineered stone than solid-color laminates.

Stainless steel is yet another option if you are planning to replace kitchen countertop, and one that is ideal in many ways. Not only is it one of the most resilient and durable materials for a countertop, but also affordable.

Stainless steel countertops are non-porous and therefore do not absorb odors, stains, or germs, which makes them very easy to clean and take care of.

Choosing to replace kitchen countertop is a big deal, and you need to take it seriously and put all the time and consideration into it that is required. There are also other factors that you are going to want to think about, including how well your new countertops are going to blend with the rest of your kitchen and also whether you are going to enjoy them for years to come and not regret the decision.

Countertops are the most major aspect to any kitchen, so make sure that you take advantage of all the available help out there and use all the available resources to your advantage. There are some professionals out there who are going to walk you through the process and ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible for you.

Recycled Glass Countertop

Recycled Glass Countertop Has an Intelligent Design

A Recycled Glass Countertop is made from recycled glass and cast concrete. The glass that is used has either come from a consumer or from the industry. The surfaces are polished and the Recycled Glass Countertop is then mainly a post-consumer recycled content.

Environment and Health

A Recycled Glass Countertop is environment friendly because both the cement and the glass used in the product has been recycled. Such countertops are also the end products for hard to recycle types of glass. It is not only environment friendly but also healthy for people who like to avoid glues which are generally used to join conventional countertops like the plastic laminate.

Characteristics

A wide variety of colors is available for Recycled Glass Countertops. You can get a single color or even mixed colors for the glass. The cement in which the glass is embedded has several color choices as well. The size of the glass pieces can also be according to your choice.

The installation of the Recycled Glass Countertop has to be done by a professional representative of the company which manufactures the countertop. Maintenance is easy, as a simple all-purpose cleaner can help to clean the countertop. Just soap and water is good enough, harsh abrasives should not be used. Taking special care of it would mean buffing it with a wax a few times a year and resealing it once every year or two.

Performance

The performance and durability of the Recycled Glass Countertop can be compared to granite. It is heat resistant, so it can be placed next to a stove. You can put a hot pot on it, but like any other sealed surface, if the heat is prolonged and excessive, the sealant may give way. Hence make sure that you reseal periodically.

Don't try and cut on it, because it will dull your knife. It is also comparable in price to granite and also marble, but it is less porous than marble. However, if acids like red wine, lemon juice or vinegar spill on it, the concrete area in between the glass will be stained, if not cleaned immediately. Even tea and coffee should not be allowed to remain on the surface to prevent stains.

Hence the Recycled Glass Countertops are especially popular because they are made of concrete and recycled glass and offer an environmental friendly alternative to natural stone and solid surface materials. Due to their non-porous, durable and heat-resistant qualities, they are extremely suitable for kitchens and bathrooms as well. Besides, the material can be shaped, cut, inlaid or mounted. That is why it can be used for applications from countertops to flooring.

quartz countertop

Should You Choose a Quartz Countertop?

With all the different types of countertops available out there, it can be difficult to decide on just which one you should go with. One of the most popular options is a quartz countertop, and there are several reasons for this, which will be discussed in detail here.

Just like with granite, a quartz countertop is very durable and great for use in the kitchen. Engineered quartz offers the general appearance of granite but its texture is more uniform and lacks the natural dramatic grains of real granite.

Builder Benefits

In particular there are many builder benefits offered by a quartz countertop. For one, like granite, quartz is generally installed by personnel trained by the fabricator or distributor. This ensures that each piece will fit in perfectly and that the end result will be as it was planned.

The builders and installers need to be familiar with the countertop, the different pieces that are included, in order to make sure that they are going to understand how to properly install them.

More Selection for You

With a quartz countertop you are offered great versatility, and there are hundreds of different design options that you can choose to go with. Quartz can even be matched up with other materials, such as travertine backsplashes and stainless steel appliances with matching backsplashes, for instance.

If you are trying to decide on a type of countertop to go with for your kitchen, quartz is a fabulous option. The biggest problem is that many homeowners do not realize just how many benefits a quartz countertop offers, and so besides reading this information you should also take additional time to learn more, educate yourself even further, to understand the advantages of quartz used in countertops and use this to best decide whether or not this is going to be the right choice for you.

Keep in mind however that there are many other options as well, and so if you decide that quartz is in fact not for you, you do still have many other materials that you can go with to have your countertops made.

The most important thing is that you hire the right people to do the installation work, otherwise no matter how quality a material you choose to use it is still going to turn out poorly and this is not what you want. You should never try to install countertops yourself because you are unfamiliar with the material and it will not turn out as good as it would have if you had have had professionals do the job for you.

marble countertop

Choosing a Marble Countertop: May Just Be the Best Thing You Ever Do

There are several different materials that you can choose from if you want to get a new countertop, and the marble countertop is one of the best options of all. With a marble countertop you can live your life in your kitchen and put a lot of wear and tear on it and never have to worry about it getting ruined.

Marble is actually the second most popular material for countertops, so it should definitely be one of your top choices when you are remodeling your kitchen. By choosing a marble countertop you are making a serious investment, and this is in fact one of the best ways to add resale value to a home.

If you are planning to sell your home in the future, this would be a wise idea, because the price for your home would be raised dramatically.

Marble countertops are among the most elegant and long lasting kitchen countertop choices, and one of the best features of these countertops is that they are so unique and personalized. Each marble countertop is different than the other, which means that you will never have the same countertop as someone else.

Marble is extremely durable because it is a natural stone, and although it will require a bit more care and maintenance than other countertop materials, as long as you take care of it, it will last you for years and be a great conversation starter in your home.

Just make sure that you seal the countertop periodically with penetrating sealers, as this will ensure it will be protected, more than anything from moisture absorption. This is important because this means that if you accidentally spill something on the counter it will not be able to seep in and end up staining.

You should never use harsh chemicals or cleaners on your marble countertop, and never ever use acid, because this can end up rotting the marble away or causing almost burn like holes in the top.

What Else is There?

Homeowners have plenty of great options available to them, and the same goes for countertops. If marble is just not your thing, there are numerous other materials that you can go with, such as granite or stainless steel.

Take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of both, to make the best decision on which specific material is going to best suit you and your home.

Laying granite tile countertop

Tips on Laying Granite Tile Countertop

Just like the ceramic tile, laying granite tile countertop is quite easy, except for the edges. That is why the first decision that you have to make is to decide how the countertop will be finished. There are several options for the edges while laying granite tile countertop. They are the custom made bullnose edge, a polished square edge, wood trim, a complementary ceramic rail or cap or a manufactured metal profile made for tile installations.

Edges

The bullnose edge is normally made by a company which specializes in polishing stone. The tile is first rounded over and then polished, so that it matches the finished side of the tile. A face piece is fixed on the front of the countertop and the countertop looks thick with a polished edge and rounded at the corners.

Another option for the edges before laying granite tile countertop is to use the square polish. The result is similar to the bullnose option, but the edges are square. To finish the countertop edge sometimes wood moldings can be used. You could also have ceramic tiles and have granite tiles installed inside the ceramic pieces. Metal edges are often used to develop to finish tile edges.

Setting Pattern

After the edges have been decided, the actual laying granite tile countertop is considered. Kitchen countertops have a standard depth and all granite tiles are exactly 12 inches by 12 inches and are butted together with a very fine grout seam.

For laying granite tile countertop in a very good kitchen, the tiles will either have a diagonal or a diamond pattern. The cuts at the back are generally small, if the kitchen cabinets are a standard size. If you have the right wood molding or a ceramic rail on the front edge, you do not need the small remainder cut at the back. You could make any other design, by using your imagination and creativity, so that the cut at the back can be spared and yet the beauty of the stone remains.

Underlayment

Once the seal is grouted, you have to look at the underlayment while laying granite tile countertop. This should be made of a quarter-inch cement board which is attached with adhesive and screws to fabricated wood base countertops. The seams in the board should be taped and filled with setting mortar.

Bedding the Tiles

Bedding the tiles is an important part of laying granite tile countertop. Applying the thinset, then creating the mortar bed for the tiles have to be done carefully. Each tile has to be carefully bedded and the alignment has to be perfect.

The calculation of the number of tiles that you need is according to the footage and the width of the tiles. If you have wide peninsulas or islands in the kitchen, they too have to be calculated. Besides, you have to subtract the areas for cook tops, stoves, sinks or other built-ins. Keep some extra tiles on hand, because there may always be some breakage and miscuts during laying granite tile countertop.

laminate countertop

Important Information on the Laminate Countertop

There are quite a few different options that homeowners have available to them when it comes to choosing a material for a countertop. It is important that you realize just how important this decision really is, especially if you are planning to spend a great deal of money on remodeling your home.

Laminate Countertop

You may be considering a laminate countertop for your home, and while granite and marble countertops now dominate conversations these days, laminate is still a great and reliable option. Especially if you are on a tight budget laminate may be one of the most ideal choices if you are trying to decide on a material for your countertop.

One of the biggest advantages of going with a laminate countertop is that there are limitless designs and possibilities. Laminate used to mean cheap looking, vinyl countertops but not anymore. There are so many wonderful things that you could do with laminate if you are looking to redo your countertops, including stone imitations that can impress the most discriminate guest.

Laminate is also very durable and resistant, and will definitely be able to last you through the wear and tear of the years, even if you have children in the home. They are very popular as well because of their cost to durability ratio and if well cared for they can last up to twenty years or more.

It is important that you take proper care of your laminate countertop if you want it to last and the key to having quality laminate is regular and proper maintenance. Make sure that you keep your eyes open for any scratches or scruffs on the countertop, because you will want to make sure that you deal with them before they get worse.

They can now be resurfaced at a fraction of the cost of replacement, so if they do start to get in pretty rough shape you will want to start off by repairing them rather than removing and redoing the entire thing.

The process will usually only take a couple of hours and your kitchen will look entirely new and ready to use the very next day. If you are interested in going ahead and getting a laminate countertop installed, you should speak to a countertop installer about them and get more information on them, namely pricing first.

This is definitely a decision that you do not want to rush into, and you want to make sure that you are going to love your countertop and be able to take care of it for years to come.

kitchen countertop

The Difficulties of Choosing a Kitchen Countertop

There are a ton of wonderful choices and possibilities when it comes to choosing a kitchen countertop, so it is important if you are planning to remodel your kitchen that you take the time and put in the consideration that is going to be necessary to ensure that you make the right decision and not one that you are going to regret.

Whether you are building a new kitchen from scratch or just remodeling a bit, choosing the right kitchen countertop is going to be one of the first and most major steps.

Material

The first thing you are going to have to do is decide on the material you want the kitchen countertop to be made out of. Naturally, when you are choosing a kitchen countertop, the material of which it is going to be made will be one of the most important considerations.

Granite is the classic choice, but also one of the most expensive so if you are strapped for cash you will most likely have to go with another material. There are many advantages of granite, including that it is more low-maintenance than other materials, and also that it is aesthetically appealing.

Marble is a bit less expensive but just as beautiful. Marble is softer than granite, so it will require more maintenance than granite, and in particular will need to be sealed more often, usually twice a year.

Stainless steel countertops are also becoming very popular, and they offer a ton of wonderful advantages. They are non-porous for one and so therefore they do not absorb odors, stains or germs, and this is something that also helps to make them very easy to clean. They are also not damaged by high temperatures which is a great feature because this means that you can set hot pots and pans on them without worry of wrecking them.

Make sure that you take time and put lots of serious consideration into the process of choosing a kitchen countertop, and ensure that you are going to love it and be able to take care of it for years to come, and this is not a decision that you want to rush into.

If you need help with this you can always contact an installer and speak to them to get more information and even get them to take a look at your kitchen so they can assess the situation and help you determine which material is going to be the right choice.

granite countertop pricing

Granite Countertop Pricing: Is it Reasonable?

Building a home isn't easy. You have to look at every corner and you have to inspect every material that is being installed in your house. One of the areas which need careful planning is your kitchen. You get to encounter the kitchen everyday in your life. Therefore, it needs good materials to make it durable enough for everyday use.

Countertops are one of the most used areas inside your kitchen. It is where you mix your ingredients, cut your food into pieces, and prepare everything else that you need. It is only vital to build one which is durable and which will provide you with a space that will suit your day-to-day activities.

Granite Countertop Pricing: Affordability Issues

When you build or remodel a home, it is important for you to have the necessary finances to supply your needs. At times, it will take a person years to be able to construct a good house. Of course, your savings will be put to good use if you know how to choose quality items at affordable costs.

For your kitchen needs, you need to find a granite countertop pricing which will not go beyond your budget. If the costs are high in a store situated in malls, then you can choose to do the search at a city hardware instead. Granite countertop pricing is far lower when you buy it directly from its source. Moreover, you can choose to buy it at a factory to make the expenses even lesser.

Granite Countertop Pricing: Is it Worth it?

Granite countertop pricing is a bit high in the market. You have to save a good deal of money if you are planning to have one. However, you'll never regret making the purchase because it is very durable compared to other countertops. Even if the granite countertop pricing will take a big cut off your budget, you will never be disappointed of the services it may bring you. It is a quality purchase because of the beauty, appeal and durability that it brings to your kitchen.

A granite countertop pricing is reasonable and is worth the cost if you buy it a lower price. If you try to search for a good one, you can find several items over the internet or over direct retailers which provide for discount countertop prices. If you have enough time, try visiting several stores and compare the prices you've seen. Remember to pick one that offers a better granite countertop pricing and the one which will not compromise your standards.

granite countertop maintenance

Understanding Proper Granite Countertop Maintenance

If you know anything about countertops, then you know that granite is the classic, optimum choice. It is the most expensive but definitely worth every penny you pay. Granite countertops are very affordable, can be used on the exterior of your home, the interior of your home, and each and every granite stone is unique so you know that in at least some way your countertop is personalized and different.

The beauty of granite countertops is truly incredibly, and granite is also a very sanitary countertop material which does not harbor bacteria, so if you do a lot of cooking this will be very beneficial because it means that there will be less worry of e.coli and other dangerous diseases.

Granite Countertop Maintenance

Granite countertop maintenance is going to be imperative for you to be knowledgeable on. If you are willing to spend the money on a granite countertop, of course you are going to want to make sure that you take care of it properly so it will last you and look great for years to come.

First and foremost you are going to want to know that the best way to keep your granite countertop looking great is to avoid bad habits. Do not leave hot pots and pans on it, and blot up spills immediately rather than giving them time to settle in.

Keep in mind that as soil can prove to be abrasive and may end up damaging the surface of the countertop, it is suggested that you steer clear of dirt and debris as best you can. You should also use sealant twice a year for proper granite countertop maintenance, as regular polishing is going to be essential to keep the stone in good condition.

You should always mend minor damages right away rather than waiting, because this will give them the opportunity to expand and get worse, so take care of the problem immediately and it will be a lot less work.

Granite countertop maintenance does not have to be difficult, but all of the effort that you put into it is really going to be worth it. You want to perform proper and regular granite countertop maintenance if you want to keep your countertops looking like new and having a gorgeous, modern home.

If you prefer, you can have a professional come in and do the work for you, but it is a simple process as long as you have the right tools and some time.

granite countertop cost

Granite Countertop Cost: Factors to Look Into

Building a house or any component in it can be very costly. Even if the repair goes only to one area of your house, the expenses could take quite a big fraction of your savings. This is the very reason why home owners have to make the wisest decisions when they want something to be fixed or they desire something to be replaced in their homes.

One area to look into would be the kitchen and its countertop. You have to know the costs, the benefits, and the drawbacks if you settle on a type of countertop. To help you with the cost issues of granite countertops, here are the things that you need to know about it.

Granite Countertop Cost Depends on the Size

Granite countertop cost depends on its width and length. The larger and the wider the material, the more it will be expensive. Since the material is made of granite, which means it is strong enough, you do not need to go more than an inch for the width. I

f you go more than an inch thick, the granite countertop cost would turn out very expensive for you. So to make you save more on this, you need to settle on something which does not go below one inch and which does not go higher than one inch in width. Remember, even a small difference can make a big change on your expenses.

Granite Countertop Cost Depends on the Source

Granite countertop cost also depends on where you purchase it. If you choose to do the trade on big malls, then the costs would most likely be high. But if you choose to do the purchase in a factory, then it can save you a lot of money. However, if you opt to go to a factory, it can take a bit of your time. So you really have to be prepared not only financially but with time as well.

Another good source for a fair granite countertop cost would be the internet. If you go over some sites and you choose to make the deal there, you'd definitely make good discounts because sites do not pay big rentals unlike that of a store. The sources for granite countertops can actually be seen everywhere. You just have to look for the one which gives you the best deals at a reasonable cost.

Granite Countertop Cost Depends on the Installer

Lastly, the granite countertop cost depends on the person installing it in your homes. If you choose to do it yourself and if you have the time for such, then it will definitely save you a lot. But if you're going to hire somebody for the job, then the granite countertop cost could definitely go higher. Again, the choices are all yours; just remember to decide on the one which can give you quality outcomes at a lesser cost.

granite countertop

Why You Should Choose a Granite Countertop Over Others

There are several different types of material that one can choose from for a countertop, but there are many reasons why you should choose a granite countertop over all the others. To help you understand why you should go with a granite countertop and what the benefits are, here is some helpful information that you will want to know.

About Granite

Granite has recently come full blown into popularity, becoming the material of choice for homeowners who are remodeling their kitchen. Granite is not only a beautiful material but extremely durable as well. There are some drawbacks however, which you will also want to be aware of, such as the fact that it does require quite a bit of regular maintenance in order to keep it in its best condition.

Because granite is smooth and cool to the touch, it is also very nice to feel as a granite countertop. It can be a bit pricier than some of the other available options, but is definitely one of the first that you are going to want to consider.

Other Materials

If you are interested in going with a granite countertop but still unsure, here is some information on a few of the other most popular materials for countertops. There is also marble for instance, which is another classic choice. It is softer than granite and so therefore it will need to be sealed more often, but it is also less expensive so if you are on a tight budget you may want to go with marble.

Engineered stone is becoming very popular, and takes small fragments of natural stone and bonds them together with a plastic polymer. Much cheaper than granite, this is an ideal choice for homeowners who are strapped for cash, and if you have children in your home it is a great option because it is very durable and resistant.

Although these are all available, the granite countertop still reigns as the classic choice, and should definitely be one of the top options on your list when you are remodeling your kitchen.

It is important to take your time and be sensible when you are remodeling your home and make sure that you make the right decisions, especially if you are planning to spend a lot on it. Glass countertops provide a unique and beautiful look that will compliment any room in your home.

Unique Design

Glass countertops provide a wide range of possibilities when you are designing or trying to match an existing design. Glass can be shaped and formed into just about anything, and it can also be colored to match any design.

One way to create an interesting look is to lay the glass countertop over some other type of material or design. This is an opportunity for you to let your imagination run wild. Whatever matches your décor or personal taste can be used for this purpose. Colored glass is also a popular choice. This allows you to match almost any design or create a modern looking design of your own.

Glass countertops are also available in a number of different surface finishes. This can be done by a number of techniques, including sandblasting, melting, and shattering. All of these create an even more unique look.

Functionality

In addition to the beauty that glass countertops provide, they are also quite functional. Glass is non-porous, so it is very resistant to staining. It's also extremely easy to clean. Spills and messes are easily wiped up with a wet cloth. Glass countertops are also able to withstand high amounts of heat.

Hot items can be placed on glass without the risk of burning or scorching. The only thing you have to be careful of is scratching. Glass will scratch easily in some cases. Because the glass used for countertops is quite thick, it can withstand much weight without breaking. However, if the surface is hit, or if something heavy is dropped on it, it may chip or even shatter.

Check out your local home improvement store to find out if they offer glass countertops. If they don't, maybe they can point you in the direction of someone who does. These types of countertops should only be installed by professionals, for obvious reasons.

The last thing you want to do is pay all that money for your new countertop, only to get it home and chip or break it while you're trying to install it. It's well worth the extra money you will spend to have someone who knows what they are doing install it.

Formica countertop

How to Care for Your Formica Countertop

Formica countertops have been around for decades and remain one of the most popular materials today. The reason for this is that you can get a great looking countertop without breaking your bank account. They will also last you a lifetime if they are cared for properly. The care and maintenance of your Formica countertop will be the focus of this article.

Cleaning

The cleaning of Formica countertops is usually fairly straightforward and simple, but certain things should be considered. For general cleaning, usually nothing more than soapy water and a rag are required. Since streaking is sometimes a problem for this type of countertop, a simple window cleaning agent should be used to take them out.

If something is spilled on the countertop, it's important to get it cleaned up as soon as possible. Depending on what the substance is, it may leave permanent stains. The most important thing to remember is to avoid using abrasive cleansers, because the surface can be easily scratched.

Other Things to Think About

There are also other things to consider when dealing with Formica countertops. First, they are not very heat resistant, so avoid placing hot items or flames on them. This type of material will burn if it is not cared for properly. Never cut vegetables or anything else directly on Formica countertops. They will scratch easily, and you do not want to leave behind ugly knife marks after you cut.

Always use a cutting board to prevent this. Also, avoid using any chemicals that contain acids around your countertops. They will quickly begin to eat through the surface. If you do happen to spill something like this on your countertop, clean it up as quickly as possible.

If it doesn't start eating through the surface, it could still discolor it. Another important thing to remember is the seam lines in your countertops. If they are allowed to become flooded with water, it will begin to expand and damage the unit. Clean up all spills as soon as possible.

If you follow these simple guidelines, your Formica countertop will last for years to come. This type of countertop will save you some money, but only if you can commit to caring for it properly. If not, you will just be spending money to replace it later on. If you don't think you can commit to this type of care and maintenance, you should probably spend some extra money for a more durable type of countertop.

cutting countertop

Installing and Cutting Laminate Countertops

Laminate countertops are among the most common choices for many homeowners. They offer durability and a great look while not being too hard on your budget. Many people think installing this type of countertop is a job that is only for professionals. Fortunately, with a little bit of know how, this job can be tackled by most do-it-yourselfers. This article will provide some useful tips for installing and cutting countertops.

Preparation

The best way to start is by removing the old laminate surface, although some people choose to put the new countertop over the old one. Next, you will need to make blanks for the new countertops by tracing the old ones on to some type of fiberboard.

You will then begin cutting the countertop blanks to the exact sizes of the original countertops. After cutting countertop blanks, you will clamp them together wherever there will be a joint. You can then drill holes where the two pieces will be fastened together.

Laminates

After the blanks are made, you can begin cutting the countertop laminate to size. This material usually comes in sheets that are 3' x 6' or 5' x 12'. When you are making your measurements for cutting countertop laminate material, it's important to add some extra material to each measurement. This will allow for any errors that you make and you can trim it off later. You can cut the laminate with a carbide tip scoring tool.

After you have made all of your cuts, you can begin gluing the laminate to the blanks. This should be started on the sides and edges. After applying the adhesive and putting the laminate in place, use a roller to make sure it is smooth. This will also ensure that the entire surface of the laminate is making contact with the blank.

After this, you can begin trimming off the excess laminate. This will be done with a small tool called a laminate cutter. This tool resembles a small router. At this point, the countertop can be installed on the brackets that the old one was removed from.

Screws will be used to fasten the countertop to the brackets. This will be done from the bottom and up through the bottom of the countertop. When the countertop is in place, run a bead of clear silicone sealant around the edges where the back splash meets the wall.

After the unit is in place, you can then begin cutting your countertop sink hole. This will be done by measuring the base of the sink. Transfer that measurement to the area where the sink will be and then drill some starter holes. You can then use a jigsaw to cut out the opening for the sink. Then you can install the sink and all of the attachments.

countertop tile ideas

Various Countertop Tile Ideas

When you are building a home or you are planning to replace a destroyed countertop, you need a few ideas on the changes that you are going to make. It's incredibly thin for its size (only about a sixteenth of an inch). It comes in many colors and patterns that can be found in practically any hardware store.

If You Do Hire A Professional

You do need certain tools to do countertop resurfacing properly, namely a glue spreader and a paint roller. There are some large chain hardware stores like Home Depot that do rent tools out. If you would rather hire someone else to do it, make sure you know if they need to remove or adjust your backsplash or even the kitchen sink in order to get the job done.

After getting all of the paperwork and a written recipt for your countertop resurfacing, contact your accountant. Sometimes, countertop resurfacing counts as a home renovation, which may qualify you for either a tax credit or tax rebate, depending on the tax laws for where you live.

countertop paint

Is Countertop Paint the Way to go?

If you are redoing your kitchen you may be trying to decide whether countertop paint is the way to go. This is one of the many options when it comes to designing countertops, and the material that you choose for your countertop is going to be very important, but there is the option of choosing paint.

The biggest disadvantage of countertop paint is that it often comes off looking cheap and unprofessional, but as long as you get an experienced painter to do the job for you, it can come off looking great and you will be glad that you did it.

Other Options

There are many other options available to you as well if you are looking to remodel your countertops, other than countertop paint. Granite is the classic material, although it is a bit more expensive it always turns out great and a lot of fun.

Finding the perfect countertop for the most active room in your home can definitely be a challenge but is worth every bit of effort that you put into it. After all this is going to be the busiest room in the home and so of course you want to make sure that it looks great and that it is going to be functional.

Granite is stain-resistant and very easy to maintain, and it is also kid-resistant so if you have children in the home you will not have to worry about them ruining it.

Marble is the second most popular choice of material for countertops, if you are interested in countertop paint. Marble countertops are becoming a very popular choice for several reasons, namely due to their unique and stylish appearance. Unlike granite or slate and other similar materials, which creates a uniform look around the room, marbled stone has an added design feature of natural accents and so you have the personalization built right into it.

These are just two of the many materials that you can use for your countertops, so if you do not want to use countertop paint at least you can rest assured knowing that you have a plethora of other options.

If you need help with this, there are professionals out there who are going to be more than willing and able to help you out, walk you through the process and make sure that you make the best decisions for your home, and for your budget, because of course you can only pay for what you can afford.

countertop materials

Countertop Materials of Stone, Wood, and Ceramic

There is such a wide range of Countertop Materials available in the market, that it is difficult to make a choice. However, one has to look at the advantages and disadvantages of the materials and the suitability for your kitchen and your own needs. There are differences in price, durability, and maintenance.

Stone-based

One of the best Countertop Materials is undoubtedly granite, if expense is no concern. It makes your kitchen look elegant and even the most modest kitchen starts looking beautiful with granite. It is heat-resistant and has a range of about three thousand colors, and is durable, trouble-free and maintenance free. But it is expensive and some stones tend to absorb stains.

Engineered Stone is very similar to granite and is also one of the expensive Countertop Materials. It is made up of quartz particles and the color range is larger than granite. It resists scratches and is easy to maintain.

For stone-based Countertop Materials there are soapstone and marble counters as well. Soapstone is very smooth and has a dark gray color. It has a rich, deep color and is stain-resistant, but needs regular maintenance with applications of mineral oil.

Marble is definitely classy, mainly because of its price. . Since it is one of the most luxurious Countertop Materials, it is used just on an island or an inset at a baking center in the kitchen. It is waterproof and heatproof, but it requires constant maintenance.

Ceramic Tile

The most popular of the Countertop Materials is the ceramic tile which is easy to maintain and durable too. For the average home it is the ideal choice, because it is affordable and a very practical choice for countertops as it can take hot pans. Its installation is easy too.

There is a large variety of colors, textures and designs available in ceramic tiles. Custom-designed tiles are expensive, and the counter surface is often uneven. The tiles can crack or chip and the grout lines become stained which makes it look ugly. But it is possible to replace the tiles, which cannot be done for other Countertop Materials.

Wood-based

Laminates are made of plastic-coated synthetics, and are relatively easy to maintain. The surface is smooth, and the pieces can be cut to size and finished on the ends. Laminates are one of the most inexpensive Countertop Materials, and they are quite durable, but not as much as granite or ceramic. There is a vast range of colors and designs available to match your kitchen cabinets. Laminates are prone to scratches and chips, but they are not possible to repair.

Many hardwoods are used as Countertop Materials lending the kitchen a warm and beautiful look. Maple and oak are the commonly used countertop woods. They are easy to clean, but can be easily damaged by water or stains.

Steel and Concrete

Stainless steel is used often as one of the Countertop Materials for big kitchens. The material is heat resistant and very durable. The countertop can be totally seamless, because it is fabricated according to size. Therefore it is expensive and may be noisy too.

Concrete Counters also belong to the high price tag of Countertop Materials, because it is generally cast right in your kitchen. It is resistant to heat and scratch and looks exotic and unusual. But it may not look beautiful, as it has a somewhat industrial look.

countertop cutting board

Is Your Kitchen Ready For An Inlaid Countertop Cutting Board?

One of the reasons you are remodeling your kitchen is to make it more user-friendly for cooking and baking. If you do a lot of cooking and baking, and are getting new kitchen countertops, then you might think of getting an inlaid countertop cutting board. Basically, these are cutting boards that are imbedded already into the countertops to make a permanent cutting or kneading board for you.

The Disadvantages

If you don’t do much cooking or baking, then getting such an immobile countertop cutting board may wind up being more trouble than it's worth. You have to be committed to clean it with bleach every time you use it. Many people with wooden immobile countertop cutting boards recommend oiling it regularly. Eventually, you will have to sand it, too, if it's made out of wood.

If the countertop cutting board doesn't fit exactly, then there will be traps for crumbs and other organic material that you won’t be able to clean. Although many professional kitchens avoid this problem with strictly bleaching their cutting boards every day, if you can't commit to this kind of maintenance, then get a conventional, portable cutting board that you can plunge into a pan of soapy water.

The Advantages

If you cook every day, you are probably already committed to a cleanliness routine for your kitchen. These habits can be easily incorporated into maintaining an inlaid countertop cutting board. These boards act not only as chopping blocks and kneading boards for dough, but they also make great hot plates.

Some countertop surfaces like zinc will melt at any temperature over 300 degrees Farenheight. Other countertop material might not melt or bend, but change color or leave permanent unsightly stains. A wooden immobile block avoids this damage or warping to your expensive countertops.

And another big advantage for avid cooks is that the board does not move. Although portable plastic cutting boards are inexpensive and easy to clean – they also can unpredictably move on you when you are chopping, slicing, grating or setting down a hot casserole dish.

An inlaid countertop cutting board can transform an ordinary kitchen into an extraordinary one for the foodie in your family. Wooden chopping blocks are not only traditional (and functional), they are incredibly beautiful. They give a comforting, old-fashioned touch to any modern kitchen. And if your kitchen is mainly metal tones – say, all stainless steel – then you need as many warm tones as you can to counterbalance the cold metallic colors.

countertop cleaners

Different Countertop Materials Need Different Countertop Cleaners

Just as not all countertop materials are alike, so not all countertop cleaners are alike. You need to know what material your countertops are made out of in order to find the correct cleansers for them. Each material has differing needs and quirks. Not only do you have to deal with stains and spills, but also with scratches and scuffs. You can also avoid damaging your countertops with some preventative actions.

Laminate

This is the most popular countertop material to be found just about anywhere. It's inexpensive, relatively light weight, scratch resistant and one of easiest to clean. Just about any cleansing product for surfaces can be used as laminate countertop cleaners. It's recommended that you try to use countertop cleaners that are as mildly abrasive as possible. You also do not want to wax laminate countertops.

Glass

Glass countertops go through cycles of being popular. However, they are incredibly difficult to keep clean. Any fingerprint or smudge seems to magnify with glass. They also can scratch easily. Any time you clean your glass countertop – or even if water spills on it – you need to towel it dry or it will leave unsightly watermarks. Use a very mild countertop cleaner like Soft Scrub and rinse with water afterwards, then towel dry.

Stainless Steel

Many professional kitchens and restaurants use stainless steel countertops. They are heat resistant, but try to use hot plates when you can. There are two kinds of finishes – bruised and smooth. The smooth tends to show fingerprints and watermarks more than the bruised. Stainless steel countertop cleaners should be as mild as possible, even just baking soda diluted in hot water.

Many stainless steel countertops -- bruised or smooth – develop a grain, similar to wood grain. When you use your countertop cleansers on such a grained stainless steel surface, rub in the direction of the grain. This will keep the countertops from looking worn out, as well as keeping them clean and sanitary.

Granite

The trendy countertop material nowadays seems to be granite. This is solid rock and is trickier to maintain than any of the materials so far discussed. You can't use harsh scrubbing sponges or countertop cleaners on granite. Even acidic foods like citrus fruits or vinegar can leave permanent stains, so clean as soon as you realize they have contact with your countertops. You cannot rely on ordinary countertop cleaners. You have to use only cleansers made specifically for stone.

countertop brackets

What The Heck Are Countertop Brackets?

Not all kitchen countertops need countertop brackets. Brackets stick out of the wall, are usually made of metal, and hold up flat surfaces. Brackets are probably holding up your bookshelves, banister or even your kitchen countertop. If you need a flat surface to work on and you don’t have a base of support like a sink–shelf combination to smack a countertop on, then you will need countertop brackets.

They Look Beautiful

Although you have to bend down to look at them, countertop brackets are often elegant and as aesthetically pleasing as they are functional. They are usually iron or a metal that can be shaped easily. Countertop brackets can be quite elaborate with twists and curves and sprawling lines. There are wooden countertop brackets available, often done in elaborate, romantic designs, but they are often far too expensive for the average home owner.

Should You Install Them Yourself?

If you've never done any home remodeling or home repair before, installing countertop brackets is not the time to start. You need not only the proper tools to get the job done, but you also need patience and a certain amount of expertise. You have to use some kind of spirit level to be sure everything is aligned properly. You will have to drill directly into the wall.

If you have trouble determining a straight line – for example, if all of your visitors comment that your pictures are hung crookedly – then you will be best off hiring someone to install the countertop brackets for you. This writer, for example, has monocular vision, which makes it nearly impossible to determine angles or if a line is straight (even when using a spirit level).

It is recommended that you need a countertop bracket for every two feet (twenty four inches) of countertop. You need to drill into the wall stud (not just a random place on the wall) in order to install your countertop brackets. These brackets will have to support an extremely heavy load. If you just drill into the wall any which way, then don’t be surprised when the wall comes tumbling down.

In order to find the wall studs, you need to keep tapping your wall in order to hear where it sound hollow and where it doesn't. You might even need to get blueprints for your home. If all of this seems a little overwhelming, then please get a professional to do the job. Be sure you get everything from the professional handyman (or handywoman) in writing.

countertop

How to Choose a Countertop for Your Kitchen

Many homeowners get scared off at the thought of choosing a countertop for their kitchen. This is really no surprise, considering not only the numerous options that area available but also the general high cost of countertops and therefore how much of a financial investment they are.

Choosing the right countertop really does not have to be difficult however, and with a few helpful tips and tricks you will be well on your way to finding the perfect countertop, one that fits your needs and budget and which is going to be well suited to your home.

Choose the Material

One of the first steps is going to be for you to choose the material for your countertop. To find the ideal material for your kitchen, you are first going to have to determine how much will need to be used and how much you have to spend. Obviously you can only pay for what you can afford, so if you are strapped for cash for instance, this is going to determine what materials you are limited to for your countertops.

Granite and marble are two of the most popular choices, because they are so durable and aesthetically appealing. They are more expensive than most other materials however, so again if you are on a tight budget you will more than likely have to choose another material to go with.

There are many other natural stone options that you may be interested in, such as limestone and soapstone, and although these are obviously not as attractive and high quality as the granite and quartz, they are still quite beautiful when done properly and also much more affordable.

Color

Another step is to choose the color for your countertop. This can also be tricky, because you want to choose a color that is going to go well with your existing décor – or the future design plan of the room – and one that you are going to enjoy for years to come and not grow bored of or regret.

For these reasons it is best that you choose a neutral color for your countertop, although if you are more daring you could always do it with a splash of color such as red or blue. If you think that resale value may be a consideration for you at some point in the future, you will want to keep your choice fairly low-key. Also consider whether your kitchen is visible to any other rooms in the home, because if not you have a lot more versatility and can have a lot more fun with it.

counter top refinishing

Counter Top Refinishing: When and Why You Need it

Slow deterioration of a home and its components is inevitable. In a matter of five years or more, you need to expect some parts of your home to be gradually losing its usual appeal. Of course, this is a foreseeable event which you must be prepared of.

One of the areas which need considerable attention is your kitchen. Since you are able to make use of it each day, it is only normal for it to appear used or slightly damaged. Whenever these things happen, we need to decide whether a whole replacement or a refinishing will be done instead. The latter procedure saves you more time and money; but you need to consider a few factors before you make a change.

When You Would Need a Counter Top Refinishing

Counter top refinishing is needed when your kitchen counter needs a repair. It is a perfect solution for those home owners who choose to make a change in the decors of their kitchen. Counter top refinishing is also suitable for those who desire a change at a limited budget. When the condition of your counter tops is significantly impaired, then that is the time that you have to do a counter top refinishing project.

If your kitchen counters need to be remodeled but you do not have the time, then you should opt for a counter top refinishing instead. This way, it will save you more time because the changes can simply be done at home. If the edges of your counter top are damaged, then that would call for a counter top refinishing.

To sum it all up, you would know the need of refinishing if only a part of your counters are destroyed. However, if the entire counter top area has been ruined, then it would require for a complete replacement which is more and expensive and which can definitely take much of your time.

Why You Need a Counter Top Refinishing

Counter top refinishing can be done under two circumstances. The first reason would be a destroyed counter top and the second reason is for you to have a new look in your home. If you are bored of the old and usual counter top that you use everyday, you can decide to change provided that you have both the money and resources.

If your counter tops are slightly destroyed, you need to replace them partially through the refinishing process. Since this is only partial restoration of damaged materials, it will be less costly and will take only a fraction of your time.

Counter top refinishing can cover many purposes which may vary from person to person. Before even deciding on one, you need to consider your financial ability and your readiness to spare time for the refinishing process.

counter top paint

Counter Top Paint: How to Apply it

Counter tops are already a beautiful add on to your kitchen. Aside from its appeal, it gives you the benefit of saving space and of having an area where you could do anything that you need for food preparation. To have better counter top effects, you need to paint it to achieve a more vibrant appeal. The counter top paint can also serve as a protective coat on your counter tops. By painting them with the matching colors that you like, you'll be able to give them a better look plus you can protect it from any unwanted damage.

Counter Top Paint and the Other Things You Need

If you decide to paint your counter top on your own, then you need to get things organized first, the first step would be gathering all the materials you need to avoid any delay in time after you've started the counter top paint job. You need to look for the following items on a hardware store and canvass its prices to make you save more; here are the things you would need: water, ammonia, sandpaper, bonding primer, paint rollers, polyurethane sealer and any choice of color for your perfect counter top paint. If you have everything ready, then you can start beautifying your counter tops right away.

There are measures you need to do before applying your counter top paint. First off, you need to cleanse the counter area with half ammonia and half water solution. You have to rinse it well and let it dry for a couple of hours. After which, you need to sand the surface of the countertop to take the shine off but not the color.

The second step would entail rolling the primer and let it stay overnight if you can. Remember to stay away from the bubbles as it might cause an ugly blemish if you start to paint. Counter top paint can then be applied after a day's wait. You have to apply three full coatings and dry the paint thoroughly after each painting.

The fourth step would be applying the clear polyurethane sealer using two to three coats. Like the counter top paint, you need to dry every after one coat of the sealer. Lastly, you have to wait for a period of twenty-four hours before you can utilize your new counter top area.

Counter Top Paint: Some Tips and Warnings

During the application of a counter top paint, you need to remember a few tips and tricks to guide you in the painting process, and these are: tape off the areas which you wouldn't want to paint on, the kitchen could not be used for a couple of days while you are painting, allow proper ventilation to the area by opening windows, avoid chemical counter top paint reactions by wearing mask, gloves and goggles; and lastly, protect the newly painted area by avoiding scratches and stains.

corian countertop

Welcome to the World of Corian: Corian Countertop

Thousands of homeowners around the world remodel their kitchens on a regular basis, and if you fall into this category, there are a few things you are going to need to know.

If you are interested in redoing your kitchen, one of the biggest and most important processes is going to be for you to be concerned with is the kitchen countertop. More than three times per day, you'll be sitting inside your kitchen and doing something nice for your family. Therefore, you need a place in your kitchen where you can prepare every delicious meal; and that would mean the countertop.

Countertops range form simple to complex forms. Some have granite materials used in them while others use steel. If you want to add something new in on your existing countertop, you can add copper counter top edges to finish the conventional look of your kitchen. Of course, you need the proper person to do the installation for you; and you also have to canvass for the cost because they can become a bit pricey.

Copper Counter Top Edges and Their Use

Copper counter top edges are mainly used for decorative purposes. It is meant to bring the conventional look in your kitchen. Instead of the usual granite or stone surface, you'll get to have a countertop which is far more stylish and attractive. Although the copper material has not been used for a very long time, it has made its comeback because of the antique finish that it brings in your traditional homes.

Copper counter top edges provide for a durable surface area. The material itself can last for a very long time and can protect the inside area of your countertops. You can also mix and match the colors of your existing countertop with the edges that you are planning to install. It can definitely accentuate the counter top that you already have.

Copper Counter Top Edges and Their Maintenance

For the copper counter top edges to last, you need to maintain and take care of it every way you could. Although the maintenance is an easy process, you need to ensure that it receives the proper care. You also need to consider that copper counter top edges are expensive. Therefore, it requires your full attention in order to make it last for a long time.

First, you need to know how to take care of a copper material. Experts say that you need lemon and table salt to preserve its polished look. For one, you can incorporate many curves and angles, something that you would not be able to do with most other countertop materials.

There is also the option of adding sparkle with aggregates or glass chips, so if you want something really unique and special in your countertop, this is a great option. You may even want to get extra modern and incorporate some personal mementos such as bits of broken dishware and bottle fragments, which will be set into the concrete and which you can look at forever.

You can really get back to nature and have a more wholesome feel to your home if you choose to go with a concrete countertop and since all concrete countertops are hand-cast, they therefore exhibit subtle variations in color and texture, so really, each countertop is unique and personalized in some way.

There are some terrific options that you have available if you are interested in remodeling your kitchen countertops, so make sure that you take your time and put some serious consideration into this process. It is the only tree which grows absolutely straight. It has no branches, and hence there are no knots. Though it is a light material, it is very stable and contracts and expands much less than wood.

It is possible to make a green bamboo counter top in the kitchen with bamboo structural planks or unfinished bamboo flooring planks. It is good fun making it and quite an accomplishable job.

An Easy Task

Make the bamboo counter top two inches thick. It gives a modern and long-lasting look in comparison to the bamboo planks with nosing edges which were used earlier. The colors available are natural and caramel. Make the bamboo counter top on site and then do the sanding and finishing, which are easy jobs. This can be done with regular urethane or epoxy resin, whatever you prefer.

Bamboo is clearly the best choice for durable countertop surfaces, because it is harder than maple. The thick stable sheets of bamboo are really beautiful and a green alternative to traditional wood counter tops. Do not use the bamboo counter top as a cutting surface. Bamboo cutting boards can be put on the countertops, which use special food-grade glues.

Various Styles

There are various styles available of the bamboo counter top. The sheets generally have a thickness of two inches. The sheets are constructed with cross-band laminates and several companies find that this is the best way to glue bamboo. Through this method the sheet is kept both flat and true and it reduces the tendency to twist or warp.

A bamboo counter top could then be constructed from vertical solid amber bamboo plywood, which is doubled up on the edges to make it one-and-a-half inch thick. For the top you can use a water based acrylic to coat the top. The vertical solid bamboo plywood is used here because it resembles solid wood and is an environment friendly choice for countertops.

The grain of the bamboo is important, and it can be traditional or parquet. The unfinished sheets are spliced together with non-toxic glue. The finishing could be done with mineral or walnut oil and the sealing is done with bee's wax in order to maintain the bamboo counter top. Both the flat grain and the vertical grain are available in the smaller sizes, whereas the caramelized parquet end grain is available in larger sizes.
